This spiral-bound handbook discusses the clinical aspects of hemostasis and thrombosis. As the author states, "The handbook was written to offer a practical guide to recognizing, diagnosing, and managing these patients." It would be useful for a student or house officer who wants a brief guide for a patient with a coagulation problem. The aims are fairly well met, but the book could be improved in several areas. The book is most suitable for students and house officers. It could also be of use for any clinician seeking concise answers to questions about thrombosis and hemostasis. The author is knowledgeable in the field, but the book might have benefited from contributions by other experts in the field. The various subjects are fairly well reviewed, but there are some deficiencies. There are some proofreading errors, which at times are not critical, such as when the author calls the fibribolytic factor "tissue plasminogen activation" instead of the correct "tissue plasminogen activator." At other times, however, the errors are more significant. When discussing hemophilia B, the text misstates that there is a recombinant factor XI available, when the intention was to mention recombinant factor IX. One not familiar with the field could mistake this for a similar situation as the use of recombinant factor VIIa, which is intended for the treatment of hemophilia patients with inhibitors. The text is not fully referenced, but includes a selection of recommended further readings at the end of each chapter. The tables, overall, are well organized and helpful. The figures are mostly stylistic cartoons, which at times are confusing. One other shortcoming is the binding of this spiral-boundhandbook came apart with the first examination of the book, with only modest use. This is a fairly well done book. Although its quality is diminished due to the errors of language and proofreading, it still could serve as a useful handbook for students and house officers seeking help with problems of hemostasis and thrombosis.

Description: This monograph explores the singular subject of how blood clots and the physiology of the clotting system may become unbalanced. The previous edition was published in 2004.
Purpose: This book brings together the current literature, producing a current, state-of-the-art understanding of coagulation physiology.
Audience: Intended for medically trained clinicians and researchers, this is a rather technical monograph requiring a basic knowledge of coagulation mechanisms.
Features: Chapters outline the basic physiology, then the historical diagnoses of bleeding problems. These are followed by outlines of how comorbid diagnoses can affect the coagulation scheme, such as liver and renal disease, and the need for cardiac bypass and ventricular assist devices. The final chapters cover the various available treatments, including the newer pharmaceuticals such as direct oral anticoagulants, antiplatelet medications, and thrombolytics.
Assessment: This timely and much-needed monograph updates the current thinking for all levels of clinicians from residency house staff through attending physicians. The book is well researched, well written, easy to read with understandable figures and tables.
