Description: This book is another in a series of texts in Contemporary Endocrinology by Humana Press. It is as good as and more clinically oriented than the other books in this outstanding series.
Purpose: The editor does not claim that this is meant to be a replacement for a textbook in endocrinology, rather it is a concentration on the treatment of various endocrine deficiency states.
Audience: This book should be very useful for non-endocrine generalists such as internists, gynecologists, pediatricians, psychiatrists, and urologists, to name a few who would otherwise prescribe hormone replacement therapy.
Features: This is a comprehensive and well written review of a broad range of clinical protocols for treatment and monitoring of therapy of hormone deficiency states of the pituitary, parathyroid and vitamin D, thyroid, diabetes mellitus, and adrenal and gonadal systems. Some topics found here but not easily found in other books are the use of androgen therapy for HIV wasting syndrome and androgen replacement in women. While Bardin's Current Therapy in Endocrinology and Metabolism, 6th Edition (Mosby-Year Book, Inc, 1997) is more succinct and geared to the endocrinologist, this textbook is more explanatory and readable and will appeal to the non-endocrinologist using hormones to correct various deficient states.
Assessment: The only major regret I have about this book is the title, which usually connotes a discussion limited to estrogen replacement in postmenopausal women and therefore may not attract the readership for which it is intended.
