Description: This is the second edition of a condensed, compact version of a larger textbook, Marino's The ICU Book, 4th edition, Marino (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2014).
Purpose: Essential components of the parent textbook are presented in an outline format with selected illustrations.
Audience: Medical students or junior trainees encountering the intensive care unit for the first time are an appropriate audience for this book, which has the benefit of consistent authorship over multiple editions. A senior anesthesiologist has been added to complement the work of the principal author, but the flavor of this book is maintained.
Features: The book opens with cardiopulmonary critical care beginning with vascular access, hemodynamic monitoring, and cardiovascular compromise states, followed by an overview of pulmonary disease and mechanical ventilation. Other organ systems include those in the abdomen and pelvis, with a focused presentation of electrolyte disorders and kidney disease. Neurological considerations are also collected in one group of chapters featuring stroke and disorders of consciousness. Remaining chapters reflect general support areas including nutrition and metabolism, pharmacology, and toxicology. Chapters are well written and use a consistent outline format. Tables, multicolor line drawings, and occasional radiographs reproduce with good to excellent quality. Each chapter includes a detailed reference list with citations dating to within two years of publication date. A brief table of contents groups chapters by type of content while a detailed subject index includes separate citations for figures and tables.
Assessment: This is an effective distillation of the parent textbook. I was particularly impressed at the quality of line drawings, tables, and other illustrations. This is an excellent read for general critical care. It does not include the needs of important patient groups such as surgical patients and injured individuals. Neither does it cover newer modes of monitoring and mechanical ventilation.
