Overview

Volume eight in the twenty-fold Music of Indonesia series presented by Smithsonian Folkways concentrates upon vocal and instrumental music from east and central Flores, a volcanic island lying to the east of Bali. Some of the polyphony heard here has been compared with the kind of singing traditionally heard in the Balkans; texturally, one might think of the songs sung by Carpathian peasants (especially the swineherds!) recorded by Bela Bartok and Zoltan Kodaly during the early 20th century. Instruments heard on Indonesia, Vol. 8 include drums, gongs, and the double flute, another parallel with traditional rural music of Southeastern Europe. Plaudits go to musicologist Philip Yampolsky for conducting more than ten years of intensive research and compiling such a vast body of field recordings. The entire series is uniformly excellent; for a well-rounded sampler, try Discover Indonesia, a diverse overview released in 2000. ~ arwulf arwulf
