Joan Chalmers lives in Durban on the coast of KwaZulu Natal in South Africa. Mother of four and grandmother to nine, her home has always been filled with stray animals, cats, dogs, rabbits, gerbils, white mice, rats, crows just to name a few, usually rescued by her children. These creatures were allowed to wander around freely and visitors would be astonished to see a crow playing the piano, or a rabbit hopping through the house. Having also lived in close contact with wild vervet monkeys since she was a child, once her own children had left home, the opening of a vervet rehabilitation centre, Vervet Haven seemed inevitable. The arrival of this baby Samango into her life, as her close friend Misty said would be an experience of a lifetime. And it was. Joan with her husband Tom run a very successful Aviation magazine World Airnews.
