Donna West-Strum most recently was associate professor in the Division of Pharmaceutical Evaluation and Policy at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences College of Pharmacy. The Germantown, Tenn., native earned her bachelor's degree in pharmacy, master's in pharmaceutical sciences and doctorate in pharmacy administration from UM. In 2007, she completed the Academic Leadership Fellows Program with the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy.

Her research interests focus on community pharmacy practice and using health behavior theories to study the provision, use and evaluation of pharmaceuticals andpharmacy. West-Strum has published more than 40 articles and presented more than 50 presentations at national meetings. She is active in the American PharmacistsAssociation and the National Community Pharmacists Association. She was the faculty liaison for the NCPA chapter at UAMS and was named NCPA Chapter Adviser of theYear in 2004. She edits the NCPA Digest, a comprehensive financial guide to community pharmacy.

Purpose: The purpose is to provide an introduction to research in the area of pharmacoepidemiology and explain how to interpret medical literature or data. There are many aspects of research that are overwhelming to new practitioners or students just beginning in research or healthcare. Whether they are conducting research or reading medical literature, they need a basic understanding in order to interpret and comprehend.
Audience: The authors define their audience as students or healthcare professionals who will apply information about medication safety or make healthcare decisions to individuals or to larger populations.
Features: While covering the basics of pharmacoepidemiology, this book is an introduction to some very complicated concepts such as pharmacoepidemiology study design and methodology, using data and databases, and statistical testing. It uses simple language, but introduces research terminology when needed with full explanation of terms. The introduction describes the foundation of research, introducing the role of clinical trials and the FDA, how this culminates in FDA drug approval, and how the clinical trial process can be lacking. This segues into the need for pharmacoepidemiology studies and their usefulness. The remaining chapters, and the heart of the book, revolve around how to conduct and interpret large population studies. The book is billed as a primer in this area of research and that is exactly what it is. While the authors suggest that readers should have a basic understanding of some research concepts, I don't think that is necessary. Students or beginners already engaged in some form of healthcare practice will find this book easy to read and understand. The authors provide helpful and meaningful real-life cases of medication use and safety errors that exemplify the need for pharmacoepidemiology studies. I appreciate that the authors make the point that pharmacists can play a significant role in patient care and can play a huge role in conducting these types of studies.
