Description: Goldfrank's Toxicologic Emergencies is the preeminent textbook for medical and clinical toxicologists - not reproduced elsewhere - and an invaluable resource. The 11th edition improves on the last edition, incorporating the most recent available evidence as well as new content. It provides high-quality, evidence-based, comprehensive, and thoughtful reviews of the most common acute toxicologic illnesses and many of the rarer conditions.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide thoughtful recommendations on the management of the poisoned patient after comprehensive analysis of available evidence and expert opinion. The authors and contributors aim to provide background, historical, pathophysiological, diagnostic, and therapeutic information on an exhaustive list of toxicological maladies and have consistently met these goals with each edition.
Audience: The book is largely written for clinical and medical toxicologists who are already familiar with these topics, but it is comprehensive enough to be helpful as well to clinicians who are not toxicologists. The chapters are lengthy - this is clearly not meant to be an "at-the-bedside" quick reference. The authors and contributors are respected and reliable experts, many of whom engage in academic research on the topics they write about.
Features: The book is divided into four parts covering the general approach to the patient; fundamental principles of medical toxicology, which includes several chapters on toxicological aspects of biochemistry, organ systems, and special populations; the clinical basis of medical toxicology, with chapters on individual toxins; and, new to this edition, population health. This book excels at providing evidence-based recommendations for the acute management of a poisoned patient. Chronic and occupational toxicology are not as well covered, as they are beyond the scope of this book.
