Overview

Recorded in 1974 and released on the Trojan label in 1975, Live at the Turntable Club is considered the first live album recorded in Jamaica, and it's a corker. Featuring cool crooner Dennis Brown, reggae-soul powerhouse Delroy Wilson, and the mighty DJ Big Youth, the set finds all three in their prime with a hometown audience going wild, although the audience sweetening is handled with a heavy hand. Crowd roars rush in and out as if the engineer was twitching on the fader, and the overdubbed intro is completely bogus, yet charming, as are the instrumental cuts from the long forgotten horn man Alexander Portious. The Soul Syndicate band provide the steady backing tracks and no less than three engineers get credit on this live album, their legendary names being King Tubby, Dennis Thompson, and Errol Thompson. For the deep reggae fan, this is a very necessary time capsule. ~ David Jeffries
